Heat Pump and Furnace Repair for Chilly Mornings

Cold snaps do not last long in Tampa, which is exactly why heating problems catch people off guard. The system sits unused for months, then the first chilly night reveals a failed heat strip, a stuck reversing valve or a thermostat that never switches modes.

Heating Systems We Repair

  • Heat pumps (the same outdoor unit that cools in summer)
  • Electric heat strips in the air handler
  • Gas and electric furnaces
  • Thermostats and control wiring

Heating Repair Tampa: Signs Your System Needs Service

  • Cool or lukewarm air when heat is on
  • A burning smell that lingers past the first few minutes
  • Outdoor unit iced over for long periods
  • Breaker tripping when heat kicks on
  • Heat that runs nonstop but never reaches the set temperature

A little dust smell on the first run of the season is normal. A smell that sticks around, or any electrical odor, is not. Turn the system off and call.

How We Diagnose a Heating Problem

We start at the thermostat, confirm it is calling for heat, then follow the signal. On a heat pump, we check the reversing valve, defrost controls and refrigerant. On heat strips, we test the elements, sequencers and limit switches. Most heating calls we see in Tampa are electrical, so many are fixed in one visit.

Your heating and cooling share the same air handler and ductwork, so we flag anything that could affect summer cooling too. For cooling problems, see our heat pump and AC repair services.

Why Heating Calls Come All at Once

Tampa winters are short, but cold fronts still push through, and when the first one arrives, systems all over town switch to heat on the same night. Problems that sat hidden all summer show up together, and schedules fill quickly.

Testing heat mode in the fall, before the first front, is the easiest way to avoid waiting. We check it during fall maintenance visits.

Heat Strip Safety

Electric heat strips get very hot by design. Dust buildup, a failed limit switch or a stuck sequencer can cause overheating or that lingering burning smell. If you notice it, turn the heat off and call.

Emergency Heat Setting

Many heat pump thermostats have an emergency heat setting. It runs the heat strips only, which works but uses much more power. If your system is stuck there, something in the heat pump likely needs attention.

Heating Questions We Hear Often

Why does my heat pump blow cool air?

In heat mode, a heat pump's air feels warmer than outside air but cooler than a furnace. If it feels truly cold, the reversing valve or refrigerant charge may be the issue.

Is a burning smell dangerous?

A brief dusty smell is normal. A strong or electrical smell means turn it off and have it checked.

Do you work on gas furnaces?

Yes, along with heat pumps and electric heat.
